Justyn Knight wins ACC title in 5,000-meter race

For the second consecutive season, a Syracuse runner won the indoor 5,000-meter Atlantic Coast Conference race. Justyn Knight followed up Martin Hehir’s record-setting pace in 2015 with a win of his own Friday.

Knight finished almost four seconds slower than Hehir’s time of 13:57.01 time in the race last season. With just over a lap to go in the race, Knight passed Virginia Tech’s Thomas Curtin. SU freshman Colin Bennie finished third in the event and junior Philo Germano finished fifth. Bennie and Germano recorded times of 14:02.88 and 14:05.08, respectively.

Friday’s race marked the third straight 5,000-meter ACC Championship Syracuse has won. Knight also won last season’s outdoor 5,000-meter race.

The women’s 5,000-meter race also finished on Friday. Junior Shaylyn Tuite finished in fourth place with a time of 16:15.53, nearly a minute after Notre Dame’s Molly Seidel won the race with a time of 15:19.64.
